On June 4, 2014, just a mere 13 minutes into Isla’s due date – my water broke, beginning her 18 hours of labor. At 6:30pm, she was laying in my arms – I will never forget that moment. It is crazy to me that her birth was six years ago! But given that Isla often seems to be six going on sixteen, it feels appropriate that she is now “old enough to need both hands for my age!”
We celebrated her fifth birthday in Colorado last year, and she has been begging for a party in Houston ever since. We had been planning a mermaid pool party until it became clear in the past few weeks that even though we are now in June, a birthday party wasn’t the best decision for us. Alas, we are celebrating with both sides of the family (mine, at lunch; Sasha’s, dinner) and her best friend, Phoenix, is coming over to swim. In the evening, we’re having a drive-by front yard party! I know it’ll be a day to remember.
Some milestones at this age include:
- Has lost two teeth (on the bottom – the top two are loose, but we’re not wiggling them!)
- Finished kindergarten and is onto 1st grade in the fall!
- Knows how to read! It’s unbelievable the difference this school year has made. She reads to us at bedtime now!
- Loves lipstick and is constantly trying to steal mine, then wipes it off before I see because I don’t approve! Ha. How obvious is smudged, wiped off red lipstick on a five year old?
- Is shy at first, then becomes silly and outgoing! Isla is very, very, very sensitive and hates the thought of upsetting anyone! She makes friends wherever we go.
- Loves taking pics and having them taken (except if she thinks TV would be an alternative activity!). My phone is full of selfies and videos taken when I’m not looking!
Last year, I asked her to answer a few questions, and I thought I’d see what she said this year (I adapted a few questions that don’t really apply anymore!):

- How many kids do you want? Three
- Where is your favorite place? Florida and Disneyland
- What is your favorite animal? Cheetah
- What is your favorite thing to wear? Dresses (“especially my mermaid dresses!” and swimsuits
- What is your favorite game to play? Hide and Seek and Dobble (Spot It!)
- What is your favorite activity? Painting
- What is your favorite thing about school? Recess
- Chocolate or vanilla? Chocolate
- Sweet or salty? Sweet
- What are your favorite books to read? Shimmer and Shine books and princess fairy tales
- Who is your favorite Disney Princess? Ariel
- Who is your favorite Disney Prince? Eric
- What is your favorite dinner? Shrimp and quinoa
